Liz D Ortiz
Liz Ortiz is a second-year Ph.D. graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University (FIU). Her interest in the environment started to develop in undergrad when she had the opportunity to conduct a summer internship in Savannah, GA, USA studying the Savannah River and wastewater treatment plants of the area. After the internship, Ortiz became interested in understanding how human interactions impact freshwater ecosystems, which inspired her to pursue a Ph.D. program. At FIU, she studies how human and biophysical controls on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, characteristics, and bioavailability vary across spatiotemporal scales in urban streams and canals in Miami, FL, USA. Her career goal is to work in freshwater science in Puerto Rico and help to provide cleaner and healthier water to society. Liz spends her spare time exercising, reading books, and spending time with family and friends.
