What makes rivers special? Who studies rivers and how are they understood? What shapes river science? In this talk, we will highlight diverse ways of experiencing, knowing, and researching freshwaters, drawing on examples from different parts of the world and focusing on rivers as systems of study. We will explore how applications of transdisciplinary concepts in freshwater science can foster greater understanding of rivers as social-ecological systems, promote collaboration and inclusivity in river-related research, and encourage more integrated river management. Finally, we will reflect on the needs and opportunities for increased global awareness, perspective, and engagement in freshwater science and among freshwater scientists.
