Water quality objectives (WQOs) protect aquatic environments whilst allowing for development that is ecologically sustainable. They are typically in place for regulation and compliance during base flow conditions, and more recently, event flow conditions. However, there is a lack of WQOs for no-flow conditions and isolated waterholes associated with intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams. There is also a lack of information connecting the water quality needed to sustain ecosystems during these periods (i.e. water quality thresholds). Current research is beginning to fill these knowledge gaps; however, it is yet to be utilised in water policy. Improvements are currently underway in farming and land use best management practice to improve water quality and habitat during cease to flow events and waterhole isolation.

We explore the knowledge gaps and challenges in developing WQOs for the intermittent rivers of Queensland, Australia, and provide recommendations.
